How can chiropractic care help with pregnancy and with newborns?
During pregnancy, there are a lot of extra forces on the mom’s body – gaining weight, the baby is pushing out in front of the body and so gravity is pulling the mom’s hips and lumbar spine forward. During pregnancy, it’s important to stay under regular chiropractic care because it keeps your alignment and your body balance. It also keeps your nervous system functioning correctly so that your birth and delivery process will be easier. Additionally, it helps to keep all that strain off the mom and so she’s much more comfortable and under a lot less stress.
Now for newborns, every single newborn that is born should be checked by a chiropractor. I’ve seen studies where they are saying upwards in the range of 80% of newborns are born with a subluxation or a misalignment of their upper cervical spine which means that the bone is out of place and it is putting pressure on the nerves and that can affect things for the child. It increases their risk of having upper respiratory tract conditions like allergies and asthma and predisposes them to having sinus problems and then down the road, they may also have headaches from that. You definitely want to get the child checked and made sure that it is good.
A very common thing that I see newborns for is colic where babies are crying a lot and it seems to be an overwhelming amount of the time they’re crying and complaining. By getting the baby checked and often by adjusting them, it clears the colic because something was not functioning right, usually their digestion.
A chiropractic adjustment for a newborn is really nothing like an adjustment for an adult. It’s very, very gentle, the amount of pressure you use is maybe a pound or two of pressure. There’s no big adjustment like with an adult. It’s just pressure and a kind of pulsing at the spinal level.
