If you pay attention to when you get sick, I bet you get sick more during the change of seasons than any other times during the year.
If you have paid attention or if you noticed this is when your kids tend to get sick I’m sure you have wondered why. There are many explanations for this.
Of course there is the old standby, “The weather has changed and it takes your body a while to get used to the weather.” While there is some truth to the idea that changes in weather make you tired or rundown and lead to a weakened immunity it doesn’t explain why when the season changes without a difference in the weather people still get sick. It also doesn’t change the fact this people still get sick at seasonal changes that live in warm climates.
Chinese medicine has an explanation for this phenomenon. Chinese Medicine believes that our bodies and therefore our health and life energy (chi or qi) is directly linked to the environment around us. An Acupuncturist and/or Doctor of Chinese Medicine will often tell their patients that are coming for maintenance to come in once per quarter as the seasons are about to change. The eastern practitioner will perform work on you to re-balance the qi in order to strengthen your immune defenses and therefore your ability to fight off the illness that comes with changing seasons.
From a slightly more western point of view, a change in seasons is the time to increase your intake of vitamin C, start taking Echinacea and by re-inoculating the friendly flora of the colon which is directly related to the integrity of your immune system.
As a chiropractor, I can tell you that there are many studies that show an increase in many different parameters of your immune system when you are under regular chiropractic care. Regular care may mean once per month but if you know the change in seasons brings illness for you then you might get adjusted a little more frequently in the time leading up to the season change.
Finally, getting the proper rest, nutrition and hydration can all play a role in your getting sick. Help yourself and take care of yourself.
